Print on Networked Brother HL-3040CN in Ubuntu

I couldn’t find the solution to print my documents in Ubuntu over network to my Brother HL-3040CN. I worked it out and hopefully this method may work on other Brother’s network printers too.

  1. Download the driver (.deb) on Brother Solutions Center. Get both LPR and cupwrapper drivers
  2. Open both files with Ubuntu Software Center and install
  • If it cannot be done, you can use Terminal to install those3. Check if both drivers, my way of doing this is to go to Ubuntu Software Center -> Installed -> Unknown. There should be both LPR and CUPS on the list
  1. Go to Ubuntu System Settings -> Printers
  2. You may now see the printer was added. But this printer is on USB port. Delete it.
  3. Create the new one using ‘Add’ button, click on ‘Find Network Printer’ and then type in your printer’s IP address (your printer is needed to be online) then select a IPP protocol. The URI should look like this: ipp://your_printer_ip:port/ipp
  4. When the driver window is appeared, choose ‘Provide PPD file’ and go to ‘/etc/cups/ppd’ and select available file there
  5. Finish the process and you should now be able to use the printer over the network. Enjoy!**
    **Note
I haven’t tried to install it or minimize the whole process yet. If there is a simpler way, please do guide meI tested on Ubuntu 13.10 x64
